Good morning, Parents. I'm Benedict Tria of Grade 8.
Oftentimes we have the impression that we, your children, need to be in "big" schools in order to grow ready for the outside world. You feel that our growth is dependent on the school size or population.
But I am here to prove otherwise.
Mont Michel has been my second home since I was 3. So, technically, I have grown up here. I have experienced playing in the big shoe, performing with my classmates in different programs, studying late at night for quizzes and exams, cramming for individual and group projects, juggling time for activities, and even watching other students leave the campus as I wait for my fetcher by the gate. It may seem as if these are just ordinary events that everyone has surely experienced as a student. However, I have come to realize there is more to these experiences.
The old and famous big shoe has played a big role in my attempts to make friends with other children in school. In fact, some of them are now my best friends that eventually turned into family.
The performances in countless programs have helped me conquer my fear of speaking and performing in front of unfamiliar faces.
Studying late at night for quizzes and exams has taught me that hard work pays off; that there is no easy way to get good grades; that good could always be better, and better could always be best.
Working on projects and tasks has proven my capacity to work well even under tons of pressure. It has also taught me that while there is value in the independence and self-reliance developed through individual work, the amount of effort we put on group work is, in fact, an effective means to teach us how to deal with different people with varying personalities. From these I learned the importance of cooperation, inclusivity, respect for others’ opinions and inputs, and leadership by example.
Balancing time for academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities such as tae kwon do, violin, and dance club, has taught me time management. We can always try and learn new things with persistence and proper time management. In fact, out of the many activities I got myself involved in here at Mont Michel, I consider most memorable the visit of the Sagittarius Girls’ Club to an orphanage in the south. The visit has opened my eyes to the greater needs of others and greatly inspired me to constantly be of service to others.
And, lastly, as I watch students step out of the gate to go to their respective homes, I see myself choosing to stay because Mont Michel is not all about the homework, seatwork, quizzes, projects, exams, grades, school size, and population. Mont Michel is about fostering lifelong friendships, leading by example, and recognizing that we students are made for something greater. Ad maiorem factus es.
